Where is the closest place to Miami I can stay, without actually staying in Miami??

There is so much to do in Miami, but I heard it is all spanish-speaking people down there and that it is dirty. Where can I stay that is close enough to shops, restaurants, beaches that are in Miami without staying there. I thought Ft. Lauderdale??
